The increasing digitization is arousing interest in solutions for the digital transformation, as companies are at risk of losing their connection – and thus their competitiveness. Artificial Intelligence, in particular, is creating novel approaches and procedures to reshape the current working world. One such approach is the use of digital assistants based on Artificial Intelligence.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a driver of digital assistants
In principle, digital assistants – independent of the industry – can be used by all types of companies: The single requirement is access to an internet-enabled device (including a notebook, tablet or smartphone). But why have digital assistants been offered for only a few years now, even though we’ve already gotten to know various digital assistants, Artificial Intelligences and human-machine interactions through numerous science-fiction movies?
1st place: Iron Man is assisted by J.A.R.V.I.S. (Just A Rather’s Very Intelligent System) – in our humble opinion the coolest digital assistant out there!
2nd place: The doctor on Star Trek Voyager is the Medical Holographic Emergency Program – possibly the most sarcastic digital assistant.
3rd place: In the Terminator movies the computer network “Skynet” is very powerful – arguably the most powerful and comprehensive Artificial Intelligence!
4th place: Knight Rider’s K.I.T.T. the intelligent car of David Hasselhoff – probably the most iconic digital assistant.
5th place: The Red Queen is a supercomputer of the fictitious company Umbrella Corporation from the Resident Evil movies – probably the evilest Artificial Intelligence.
Opportunities with Artificial Intelligence
What has already been presented to a wide audience in numerous science-fiction movies for decades is already a reality – the use of digital assistants with Artificial Intelligence. In the last few months, the significant emergence of Artificial Intelligence in private and professional life has been the subject of intense media attention, with some of its advantages and disadvantages highlighted in some detail. The following three statements are of high interest for the professional environment:
- 80% of executives see Artificial Intelligence as a strategic opportunity. (WITH Sloan Management Review)
- 40% is the projected increase in human productivity through supportive AI systems. (Accenture)
- 15% of all companies dealt with Artificial Intelligence as of today. In a year, it will be twice as many. (Adobe)
Artificial intelligence would be the ultimate version of Google. The ultimate search engine that would understand everything on the Web. It would understand exactly what you wanted, and it would give you the right thing. We’re nowhere near doing that now. However, we can get incrementally closer to that, and that is basically what we work on.Larry Page – October 2000
Artificial Intelligence (AI): Where is the journey headed?
AI is already on the roadmap in many companies, especially in American and Chinese companies, as they have identified a high relevance of Artificial Intelligence for private and professional life. Especially the high level of maturity of Artificial Intelligence makes it possible to (semi-)automatically implement numerous processes and tasks in our daily lives – affected people do not have to be active or only selectively active and are mainly supported by Artificial Intelligence.
If the use of Artificial Intelligence is evaluated for the next three years, there are three interesting predictions from Gartner:
- In 2019, 50% of all data analyzes will be generated via voice, free text or automatically. (Gardener)
- By 2020, AI will generate $ 2.9 trillion in business value and save 6.2 billion working hours. (Gardener)
- In 2021, systems will do more than 50% of all analysis and data-related tasks themselves. (Gartner)
I fear that AI (Artificial Intelligence) may replace humans altogether. If people design computer viruses, someone will designStephen Hawking, Wired, 2017
AIthat replicates itself.
There are different future scenarios for living and working with Artificial Intelligence. Regardless of the scenario, Artificial Intelligence has tremendous future potential, especially in conjunction with the use of a digital assistant. We believe that people can benefit from the meaningful use of Artificial Intelligence.
Situation Analysis: Which digital assistants with Artificial Intelligence exist?
The market for digital assistants is still very young and there are some providers in this environment, especially in the US and Asia. Roughly this market can be divided into assistants for the (1) for private and (2) the professional context.
Digital assistants for private use
In the first market segment, the current assistance systems for private users are solutions from the manufacturers of smartphones or their operating systems. Although these are only in the broader sense a competitor to Neo, but an understanding of the current applications and the future plans of current players (Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung and Amazon) in the market is quite relevant. The assistants are all still young: Siri is the industry’s oldest since 2011 and was introduced to the Mac in mid-2017, while the Google Assistant for Android is not yet available on all Android devices.
Digital assistants in the B2B context
In the professional environment, the market for digital assistants is still relatively unoccupied. In the long run, the assistants of Google, Apple and Microsoft will venture into the B2B market, as Amazon has already done with Alexa: With Alexa for Business, Amazon offers the services of his assistant for the enterprise environment with focus on Facility Management and conference rooms.
In the B2B environment, however, there is still no established provider offering a digital assistant with an Artificial Intelligence. So far, only providers who have taken on specific topics, such as the appointment by x.ai.
Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant compared to Neo
When talking about digital assistants, many people usually think of the big three: Apple, Google, and Amazon with their assistants Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa. At the same time, one wonders if it is not naive to believe that a small startup from Germany with its digital assistant “Neo” can compete with these tech giants? We do not see ourselves as competitors to the tech giants from the States – our focus is on specific B2B use cases, the compliance and data protection regulations. The following illustration summarizes the differences:
We are convinced, however, that digital assistants powered by Artificial Intelligence will not replace our jobs. Instead, we believe in a future where digital assistants powered by Artificial Intelligence will support us and allow us to focus on meaningful and value adding activities. Feel free to contact us and we will work with you to find out how our digital assistant can help you and your company.
